Human Rights Commission of Belize

Condemnation of Gender Based Violence and Public Sharing of Harmful Videos

The Human Rights Commission of Belize joins the office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children in its strong condemnation of acts shown in a video, apparently shared via Facebook Live, and being circulated among the public. We strongly urge the public to immediately refrain from sharing and viewing the video any further and urge individuals who have come into possession of the video to immediately delete it from their personal devices.

We cannot stress enough that we all have a responsibility to create and foster a safe and healthy environment for women and children in Belize. Viewing and sharing a video of sexual and physical violence, even when done to condemn the act, further violates the dignity and rights of the victim.
We note and commend the swift response of the Belize Police Department in investigating this deplorable act. We take this opportunity to underscore the importance of conducting a gender sensitive investigation and prosecution in order to ensure that perpetrators of this heinous acts are held accountable.

HRCB will continue to monitor the case to ensure that the rights of the victim are protected and enforced.
